SpaceX is an American aerospace company led by Elon Musk and it has recently announced its latest project : the creation of a permanent, habitable base on the Moon. Called the “Lunar Home,” the project aims to establish a safe, self-sustaining residence for astronauts, scientists, and eventually tourists, with a due by 2030. This project is the first step to achieve Musk's goal to expand human life on a multiplanetary level.
Therefore, the “Lunar Home” will be designed to support human life for extended periods, with plans for essential systems like air filtration, water recycling, and radiation protection. SpaceX intends to leverage its reusable Starship rockets for transporting materials and crews.
According to SpaceX, the lunar base will be situated near the Moon’s South Pole, an area known for its potential access to water. This location also benefits from consistent sunlight, which is vital for solar power generation. The project has received a lot of praise from the scientific community. Experts are highlighting the potential it could provide into lunar geology and resource utilization, even though significant technological challenges remain.
SpaceX has yet to confirm the total cost of the project. Although it seems Musk has already shown his commitment by reducing space travel expenses.
All the experts are looking at the SpaceX company because of the ambitious timeline and all the obstacles associated with building a self-sustaining habitat on the Moon.
